Biography
Thornton W. Burgess (1874–1965) was an American naturalist and children’s author who wrote over 170 books and 15,000 stories featuring beloved animal characters. Born in Sandwich, Massachusetts, he created Peter Rabbit (not to be confused with Beatrix Potter’s character), Reddy Fox, Jimmy Skunk, Old Mr. Toad, and many other inhabitants of the Green Forest and Green Meadow. His stories taught children about nature and conservation while entertaining with gentle humor and moral lessons. Burgess was a pioneer of nature education and conservation advocacy through children’s literature.
