Biography
Tom Godwin (1915–1980) was an American science fiction writer best known for his short story “The Cold Equations” (1954), one of the most famous and debated stories in the genre’s history. Born in rural Louisiana, Godwin led an itinerant life before turning to writing science fiction in the 1950s. His novels The Survivors (1958) and its sequel The Space Barbarians (1964) explore themes of human adaptation and survival on hostile alien worlds. Though his output was modest, “The Cold Equations” alone secured his lasting place in science fiction history.
