Tom Taylor
Biography
Tom Taylor (1817–1880) was an English dramatist, critic, and editor of Punch magazine. One of the most prolific playwrights of the Victorian era, Taylor wrote or adapted over a hundred plays. He is best remembered, somewhat ironically, for Our American Cousin (1858), the comedy that was being performed at Ford’s Theatre on the night President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in 1865. Taylor also served as editor of Punch from 1874 until his death and was a professor of English at University College London.
