Biography
Virgil (70–19 BC), full name Publius Vergilius Maro, was a Roman poet and the greatest literary artist of ancient Rome. Born near Mantua, he rose to become the foremost poet of the Augustan age. His three major works represent a progression of ambition: the Eclogues (pastoral poems), the Georgics (a didactic poem on agriculture), and the Aeneid, Rome’s national epic, which tells the story of Aeneas’s journey from Troy to Italy and the founding of the Roman race. The Aeneid has been one of the most influential poems in Western literature, shaping Dante, Milton, and countless others.
