Biography
Vladimir Galaktionovich Korolenko (1853–1921) was a Ukrainian-born Russian writer, journalist, and human rights activist. Born in Zhytomyr, he was repeatedly exiled to Siberia for his political activities before settling in Nizhny Novgorod. Korolenko’s stories and novellas, infused with humanitarian compassion and lyrical prose, made him one of the most respected Russian writers of his generation. His works include The Blind Musician, Makar’s Dream, and numerous short stories exploring the lives of ordinary people. Korolenko was also a courageous public advocate, defending victims of pogroms and political persecution.
