Biography
William Makepeace Thackeray (1811–1863) was an English novelist who rivaled Charles Dickens as the most popular Victorian fiction writer. Born in Calcutta to a wealthy family, he lost his fortune gambling and turned to journalism and fiction. His masterpiece Vanity Fair (1847–1848) established him as a major novelist with its satirical panorama of early nineteenth-century English society. Thackeray’s fiction is distinguished by its sharp social satire, psychological realism, and narrative sophistication—he was one of the first novelists to address readers directly and comment on his own storytelling.
