Biography
Xavier de Maistre (1763–1852) was a French-language Savoyard writer, painter, and military officer, brother of the philosopher Joseph de Maistre. Born in Chambéry, he served in the Sardinian and Russian armies. De Maistre is best known for A Journey Around My Room (Voyage autour de ma chambre, 1794), a whimsical, philosophical narrative written during forty-two days of house arrest. This charming work pioneered an introspective literary form that influenced writers from Laurence Sterne to Marcel Proust. His other works include short fiction exploring themes of love, fate, and human compassion.
