Hudibras is a mock-heroic satirical poem by Samuel Butler (1613–1680)—a different Samuel Butler from the Victorian novelist. Written during the Restoration period, it satirizes the Puritans through the misadventures of Sir Hudibras, a Presbyterian knight, and his squire Ralpho, an Independent. The poem’s sharp wit, vivid caricatures, and inventive rhyming couplets made it enormously popular in its time and a favorite of King Charles II.
