Moribund Society and Anarchy (La Société mourante et l’anarchie, 1893) is Jean Grave’s most influential work, a systematic critique of existing social institutions and an argument for their replacement by anarchist principles. Grave analyzes the state, capitalism, religion, the military, and the legal system as interconnected mechanisms of oppression that sustain an unjust social order. He argues that these institutions are in terminal decline—“moribund”—and that anarchism offers the only coherent alternative based on voluntary association, mutual aid, and the abolition of coercive authority.
