Unto This Last (1860) is John Ruskin’s revolutionary critique of classical political economy, a work that challenged the fundamental assumptions of Victorian economic thought and anticipated modern welfare economics. Originally published as four essays in Cornhill Magazine (which cancelled the series due to reader outrage), the work attacks the idea that economic behavior can be understood through self-interest alone, arguing that human relationships, justice, and moral purpose must be central to any genuine economic theory. Ruskin demolishes the notion that the wealth of nations consists merely of accumulated goods, proposing instead that “there is no wealth but life”—that true wealth is measured by human health, education, and happiness. He critiques the exploitation of workers, the degradation of labor into mere commodity, and the social costs of unregulated capitalism. The book’s influence was enormous: Gandhi called it the work that transformed his life, translating it into Gujarati; the British Labour Party cited it as a foundational text; and its ideas anticipated concepts of social welfare, fair wages, and the measurement of economic well-being beyond GDP.
