Arnold Bennett

Biography

Arnold Bennett (1867–1931) was an English novelist, playwright, and essayist who became one of the most commercially successful and critically respected writers of the Edwardian era. Born in Hanley, Staffordshire, in the industrial Potteries region that he immortalized as the “Five Towns” in his fiction, Bennett moved to London and then Paris before returning to England. His masterpiece The Old Wives’ Tale (1908) follows two sisters through decades of ordinary life with extraordinary compassion and detail. Bennett combined French naturalist technique with deep sympathy for provincial English life, creating novels of remarkable psychological and social insight.
