Margaret Wilson

Biography

Margaret Wilson (1882–1973) was an American novelist who won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1924 for her debut novel, The Able McLaughlins. Born in Traer, Iowa, Wilson grew up in a Scotch-Irish Presbyterian community whose culture and values deeply informed her fiction. She graduated from the University of Chicago and spent several years as a Presbyterian missionary in India, an experience that broadened her perspective on cultural and religious traditions. Returning to the United States, she drew on her Iowa childhood to write The Able McLaughlins (1923), a realistic portrayal of Scotch-Irish pioneer life on the Iowa prairie in the 1860s. The novel’s Pulitzer Prize win was controversial—some critics felt the award should have gone to more established authors. Wilson published several more novels, including The Law and the McLaughlins (1936), a sequel, but never matched the success of her debut. She later moved to England, where she lived quietly until her death. Despite her relative obscurity today, Wilson’s debut remains a valuable document of Midwestern pioneer experience.
