Biography
Thornton Wilder (1897–1975) was an American playwright and novelist, one of only three people to win Pulitzer Prizes in both drama and fiction. Born in Madison, Wisconsin, he studied at Yale and Princeton and traveled extensively. His novel The Bridge of San Luis Rey (1927) won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, and his plays Our Town (1938) and The Skin of Our Teeth (1942) each won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Wilder’s works explore universal human themes—love, fate, community, and the meaning of existence—with a deceptive simplicity that masks profound philosophical depth.
