Thucydides (c. 460–c. 400 BC) was an Athenian historian and general, author of the History of the Peloponnesian War, one of the foundational works of Western historiography. Born into an aristocratic Athenian family, he served as a general in the war he chronicled but was exiled after failing to prevent the fall of Amphipolis to Sparta. His exile gave him access to both sides of the conflict and time to compose his rigorous, analytical history. Thucydides rejected mythological explanations in favor of rational analysis of political and military events, establishing standards of evidence-based historical writing that endure to this day.
