William Morris (1834–1896) was an English designer, artist, writer, and socialist activist who was one of the most extraordinary creative figures of the Victorian era. As founder of the Arts and Crafts movement, he transformed decorative arts and printing. As a writer, he is considered the father of modern fantasy literature — his late prose romances set in invented medieval worlds directly inspired J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis. Morris was also a pioneering socialist whose utopian novel News from Nowhere remains influential. He founded the Kelmscott Press, which revolutionized book design.
