Thomas Woodrow Wilson (1856–1924) was the twenty-eighth President of the United States, a political scientist, and an academic. Before entering politics, Wilson served as president of Princeton University and governor of New Jersey. As president (1913–21), he led the country through World War I and championed the League of Nations. Wilson was also a prolific writer, producing works on government, history, and political philosophy. The New Freedom (1913), based on his campaign speeches, articulates his progressive political vision of economic liberty and democratic reform.
