Władysław Stanisław Reymont (1867–1925) was a Polish novelist and Nobel Prize laureate. Born Rejment in Kobiele Wielkie, he worked as a railway clerk and actor before turning to writing. Reymont is best known for The Peasants (Chłopi, 1904–09), a monumental four-volume novel depicting a year in the life of a Polish village, organized by seasons. The novel won him the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1924. His other major work, The Promised Land (1899), is a naturalistic portrayal of industrial Łódź. Reymont’s work is celebrated for its vivid depiction of Polish rural and industrial life.
